You need more than a stopwatch and a notebook if you want to log your billable hours accurately and charge your clients accordingly. You can use all sorts of time tracking applications, but they are not very helpful if your work takes you away from your computer. This is where Chrometa comes in. Like other similar applications, it monitors and logs your activity on a computer, but instead of storing the recorder statistics locally, it will synchronize them on a remote server. This gives you the possibility of working on different computers and logging your billable hours in the same database.

Chrometa works like DropBox or other similar services. Once you download and install the application, which takes only a few seconds, you have to create an online account and let Chrometa connect to that account. You can associate multiple computers with the same account. The application is available for Android and iOS platforms as well, so you can use it wherever you go.

Once Chrometa is installed and launched, you can work on your projects as usual. The application will log the applications you use and the time you spend with them. It works quietly in the background, without hindering you with any prompts or notifications.

You can right click Chrometa's system tray icon and select a few options, if you want to pause or resume its monitoring function, bring up a small settings panel or if you wish to upload the logged statistics. The online account can be accessed right away, by selecting one of the available options or by double clicking the system tray icon. Once you are logged into your account, you can organize the recorded information and bill your clients, on a web interface.

Used applications are displayed in a list, along with their usage time. You can expand an application's entry, if you want to see your opened documents, visited web sites and so on. The application allows you to switch to a timeline, which includes a similar list of applications, but in a chronological order. You may create client entries and assign one or more projects to a specific client, along with your hourly rate. Application entries can be categorized by sending them to an existing project.

If the computer is idle, the application will log the elapsed time as "Away". Non-billable time periods can be sent to user defined categories. Chrometa can illustrate your time summary in a graph, so it is important to categorize your applications. When a project is complete, you may create and edit invoice templates, on which you can enable Paypal and Lawpay payments. You can mark your invoices as payed or cancelled, download them if you wish to print them or email your invoices to your clients.

Pros

You can use Chrometa to keep track of your billable hours. The best part is that you can synchronize the recorded information between one or more computers or mobile devices and a remote server. The application works in the background and it will not hinder you in any way.

Cons

There are no serious drawbacks to mention. Thanks to Chrometa's smart capabilities, you may keep track of your billable hours, down to the last minute, anywhere in the world.
